Evidence of human settlement in this area dates back to the Stone Age and earlier and traces of human activity in fact date back as far as 70,000 years ago. Establishment of the city of Arnhem however, took place in around 1233 when the town was conferred city status by Otto II, Count of the Guelders. He then settled in the town, which had previously belonged to a priory, developed the city and added walls. During the 19th century Arnhem became a bit of a retreat town for former sugar barons and planters who came back from the Indies and settled in the city. Chosen for its beauty and the numerous parks and greenery within the town, this developed into an ideal retreat for the land owning middle classes. During the Second World War Arnhem came to the front line of battle during Operation Market Garden, a British and Polish campaign in 1944 to capture Arnhem Bridge, which failed when the small number of troops were overwhelmed by enemy forces. The city was eventually liberated a year later by Canadian troops and the bridge rebuilt in later years and renamed the John Frost Bridge, after the British commanding officer of the division.
